Entrepreneurial Ventures

Host: “Both of you have not only excelled in your roles as dietitians, but have also ventured into entrepreneurship. Amber, could you tell us about your business and how you have balanced running a business while working full-time in a traditional job?"

Amber: “Well, I complete my freelance creative work in my free time on evenings and weekends. It has evolved from a hobby and I work on a project basis around milestone events like showers and weddings, which makes it more flexible. My clients come to me via referrals and word-of-mouth. Just to give you a few examples, I’ve done photography for high school senior photos, created a special wedding ensemble for a bride-to-be, and created a social media campaign with print marketing materials for an annual roller skating party. Since I am always making things, I’ve ventured in and out of the craft business including craft fairs and boutiques. Recently, I started showing my artwork and my father’s artwork for free online in our virtual reality galleries.  If people want to purchase it, we offer it for sale via our online boutique. Of course, the skills I use in my career translate here as well: project management, time management, client interaction, writing, and communication - just to name a few.”

Host: "Fantastic, Amber! You have cultivated a diverse set of skills!  Larissa, over to you. How have you blended your work experience in various areas into this new business venture?”

Larissa: “My background as a dietitian and work experiences in different settings has helped me hone my professional skills. These skills have set me up for success with my wellness business because I’ve learned how to support people in facilitating the health behavior changes that will help them reach their personal wellness goals. In addition, my research work has provided the opportunity for me to develop essential communication and presentation skills which I share with other health professionals so that they can clearly communicate health information in an easily understood way.”

Sharing Your Knowledge

Host: “It sounds like you are both extremely knowledgeable and it is clear that you are passionate about sharing health knowledge. Amber, how do you reach out to your audience to educate them about health in a creative way?"

Amber: “My creative work does crossover like when I produced a series of instructional YouTube videos for a contract. Often I infuse my PowerPoint presentations with a lot of creative flair, which I enjoy. I’ve given fun wellness presentations about healthy lifestyle choices as part of the employee wellness programs. I also served as a member of the Be Well workgroup for several years. Whenever I am presenting our work or training people, I go out of my way to make the complicated information relatable, interesting, colorful, and polished. On a smaller scale, I enjoy mentoring younger people to share knowledge.”

Host: “And Larissa, I'm curious to know how you balance the science of nutrition with the art of creative expression when communicating health information?"

Larissa: “I am very passionate about providing accurate and reliable health information since there is a lot of misinformation going around. I also really enjoy sharing visually-appealing education in a way that can be easily understood. I strive to blend my health knowledge and creative work into digital products such as nutrition e-books, habit trackers, planners, and other products that empower and inspire others to achieve their health goals. I have also decided to integrate my personal hobbies of gardening and travel into my business since these areas bring me joy and also promote overall wellness and work-life satisfaction.”

Inspiration & Motivation

Host: “Your journeys are truly inspiring! Amber, what drives you to continue this unique combination of health and creativity in your career?"

Amber: “I find having a satisfying hobby or artistic practice is key to my personal mental health and physical well-being. I am blessed to live in a beautiful place, so I often find inspiration from exploring my community. I also find inspiration via technology, family, and friends. Thankfully, there is always an event to celebrate and I enjoy being part of the team to make milestone events wonderful occasions for guests. Like Larissa, the Covid-19 lockdown was a time of reflection. During this time, I created my exciting new line of work to pass the time. I didn’t plan it, but these projects eventually became the basis of the new e-commerce shop and virtual reality galleries. During this time, I realized that it really is “now or never!” and that if I don’t share my art, then it will just be locked away in my computer and my phone.”

Host: "Wonderful! Larissa, what keeps you motivated to continue merging your health expertise with creativity in your professional life?”

Larissa: “I saw becoming an entrepreneur as a unique opportunity to use my technical skills and education as well as my passion for supporting others in their wellness journeys. I really wanted to use this opportunity to merge my analytical left-brain side with my creative right-brain into meaningful work. When you run your own business, you get to decide what work has meaning for you. Without passion, you are not going to want to wake up each day to do the work that needs to be done. This is why I’ve chosen to blend my interests in nutrition, gardening, and travel into my business.”

Thank you for watching and/or reading along! Please stay tuned for the last installment of the interview which will be released in the coming weeks.
